New Payment Processor

Braintree Payments

As we said in a previous newsletter, we wanted to add a payment processor that allows you to keep more of your sales. We believe we have done that now. ChrisLands.com has just added support for BraintreePayments.

Now you can automatically accept credit cards through BraintreePayments.com with your ChrisLands.com store. BraintreePayments offers the ability to accept credit cards for a low per transaction fee. They have NO monthly or annual fees. Although we have not researched every possible payment processor, in our experience, this is one of the lowest cost processors available. They also have no limits on the transaction amounts.

By using Braintree, when your shopper chooses to pay by a credit card, your system will interact in the background to securely process the credit card. Your shopper never leaves your site as they do with other payment methods (PayPal for instance).

No merchant account is required and Braintree supports many countries, United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and more. Have a look at BraintreePayments.com to see countries supported.

Find out more at your store, as the administrator:

Login -> Administration -> Add Payment Method (left menu) -> Accepting Credit Card (top of page)

As the service provider, we had the option to include an additional fee, a service fee, so ChrisLands could earn a little revenue on each transaction. We have not done that. Our intent is to keep your costs as low as possible so adding fees seemed contradictory to that intent. We hope you appreciate that! We also hope that you find Braintree Payments useful and it helps with your processing costs!

If you have no other means to accept credit cards, besides Paypal, or your payment processor is relatively expensive, you might seriously consider trying BraintreePayments.com. You might even use Braintree for convenience if you are manually processing through your brick and mortar POS. Its a pay as you go system. It couldn't hurt and it might help your sales!

Final Note: I mentioned in a previous newsletter that ChrisLands would be changing credit card processors to save on processing fees ourselves. We have put this off in order to get Braintree working for you first. Now we will be making that change soon. Sometime after March 1st, I will be asking ALL of you to update your credit card with ChrisLands. I will make an announcement when we are ready but everyone will have to update their information after this announcement is made. Thank you!

Paypal IPN

Now something not so fun to talk about. Recently there has been some inconsistencies using PayPal with Instant Payment Notification.

As you may know, Paypal with Instant Payment Notification is a method where your store does not record the order until Paypal sends a notification to your store saying the payment is completed. If the customer does not complete the order at PayPal or Paypal's notification does not arrive at your store, you may never know they were even at your store as no order is recorded.

I have received a few emails recently about Paypal with Instant Payment Notification not sending notifications. I was going crazy trying to figure out what might be the problem. I had made no change to any Paypal code. I even went to PayPal's IPN Simulator and tried sending test IPNs over and over. Sometimes they went through and sometimes they did not. The ones that did not gave no error message other than "cannot send IPN at this time". That was not helpful.

Of course, like almost everyone else, I thought it was on our end, even though I had made no change to this particular code. Then I received the following from a store owner:

I spoke with PayPal today took over thirty minutes to find out if the problem with IPN was corrected, it is a problem on PayPal's end that they are working on. Thanks for looking into this issue. I'll update Chrislands if I find out anything else on this problem.

At this time, given the email I received, some test IPNs work, I made no code changes, and some stores have Paypal IPN working fine, I cannot be sure if any continuing problems are on our end or theirs.

For the time being, I suggest using Paypal without IPN if you can afford the time to ensure you receive the payment before shipping the product.

Paypal without Instant Payment Notification records the order at your store immediately and then sends the customer to Paypal to complete the payment. So you will want to make sure you receive a payment, make sure the customer completed payment at Paypal, before shipping the order. The benefit is that if they do not complete the payment you have a record of their information in the order to contact them and maybe still complete the order.

To see what method you accept now, at your store as the store administrator:

Login -> Administration -> List Payment Methods (left menu)

To possibly change the method you accept, at your store as the store administrator:

Login -> Administration -> Add Payment Method (left menu)

If you still need to use Paypal with IPN, we suggest you go to your Paypal.com account and check the status of your IPN settings.

Review

Over the last several months, ChrisLands has added several new features. From what I can tell, not everyone is aware of them. Since I am emailing this newsletter, I thought I would take the opportunity to review some here.

ChrisLands Search

ChrisLandsSearch.com is a search engine for ChrisLands store owners' products. It is meant to be a simple site, nothing too complicated, with the hopes of directing traffic to your stores.

This is an OPT-IN feature. You have to choose to do this and, yes, there are some minimal fees involved. We intend to redirect a large portion of fees earned for this service back into advertising. You could say you are getting twice the bang for the buck. In a way.

Stock Data

We are now offering stock data. However, I am not satisfied with the integration yet. We are only getting something like a 30% match rate on ISBNs. Not spectacular. So I am still working on it as I can. However, until I am satisfied, there is not going to be any monthly fees invoiced for using this feature. So now might be a good time to give it a try.

Some of you might relate to this. I come in everyday planning to get 6 or 8 tasks complete. In many cases I'm lucky to get 2 or 3 done. There is always some other priority that comes up. I only mention this as it is already February 18th. I cannot believe how fast the year is going and how much I want to get done!!!
